Spread the love

The Eastern Polynesian people including the Maori, used traditional methods and implements throughout the islands. . The markings or tattoos were used to show prestige or standing in the community. A person without marking was considered a lower class than those with markings. The symbolism is also accented in a rite of passage and receiving the markings when a boy becomes a man. The tattoos also were intended to make one self more attractive to the opposite sex. Men would usually place the tattoos on their face, thighs, and buttocks while the women would wear the markings on their lips and chin. Other parts of the body were also marked such as the calves, stomachs, and back.
